THE MYTH OF 1 BTC PER PERSON

Analysis of the figure “0.27% of the world population”
In the collective imagination of Bitcoiners, a phrase often comes up like a mantra: "If everyone wants 1 BTC, there won't be enough for everyone."
This claim is based on a simple calculation: there will only ever be 21 million bitcoins, for a global population estimated at over 8 billion. A quick division gives: 21,000,000 ÷ 8,000,000,000 = 0.002625 BTC per person, or 1 bitcoin for 0.27% of the world's population.
In other words, 1 BTC represents a rare and almost inaccessible portion for the vast majority of human beings. This fuels the myth: "If you own a whole bitcoin, you are in the elite 0.27%." This striking figure is often used as a psychological argument to accumulate BTC before it's too late.
But what is this figure really worth?
1. A theoretical reality
- Millions of BTC are lost forever, locked in inaccessible wallets.
- Some have several thousand bitcoins, making fairness impossible.
- Institutions and funds hold an increasing share of the total supply.
The result: distribution is extremely unequal. The dream of “one bitcoin per person” was never a network goal, only a symbol of extreme scarcity.
2. Psychological reality
The idea that “1 BTC = absolute scarcity” functions primarily as a motivational tool. It pushes individuals to project themselves into a future where global demand for a limited asset explodes. Owning a whole bitcoin becomes a quest, a symbol of independence, even a rite of passage among Bitcoin maximalists.
3. Severability and Accessibility
Fortunately, Bitcoin is divisible into 100 million satoshis. While you can't acquire 1 BTC, you can own significant fractions:
- 0.1 BTC
- 0.01 BTC
- 100,000 sats…
And if Bitcoin's value increases drastically, these amounts will have considerable purchasing power in the long run.
Conclusion
The “1 BTC per person” myth is both a reminder of scarcity and a powerful narrative for the Bitcoin community. It's not an achievable goal for everyone, but a powerful metaphor: that of an unevenly distributed, radically finite, and potentially revolutionary asset.
And you, are you part of the 0.27%?
